Dune: Part One

Between 1965 and 1985, US writer Frank Herbert published his six-volume novel series Dune, a saga including the dynasty Altreides and the desert planet Arrakis, about treachery and courage. Dune captured the imagination enormously, and already in the 1970s the plan arose to film the story. But the extremely complex Dune proved virtually unfilmable; director Alejandro Jodorowsky bit his teeth on it, while David Lynch's 1984 film adaptation was considered a failure. In 2021, Canadian director Denis Villeneuve (Arrival) had more success: his film adaptation was widely acclaimed and won six Oscars, among other awards.

In the distant future, Duke Leto Altreides is commissioned by Emperor Shaddam IV to replace Baron Harkonnen as ruler on the planet Arrakis. An arid but highly valuable planet, as it is the only place where the 'spice' is found, a mind-altering substance essential in interstellar travel. But Harkonnen is not resigned to that. And can the emperor be trusted? Featuring Timothée Chalamet as Leto's son, the clairvoyant saviour Paul Altreides. The music is by Hans Zimmer.
